“Inside Llewyn Davis” could be surprise nominee depending on the voters’ passion for the film.

The winner of Best Costume Design tends to be the film with the most “apparent” costumes. The bigger, flashier, more glittery, the better. It helps that four of the most likely Best Picture nominees are period films. They are most likely going to reap nominations, the fifth nominee happens to also be the frontrunner of the category. When it comes to extravagance, no film this year made it to the level of The Great Gatsby. The costumes that (somewhat) recreated the roaring twenties are definitely the frontrunner here.
